Since it formed in , the Huron Domestic Assault Review Team DART has collected many support agencies to prevent and address victims of domestic and sexual violence. Photo: Getty Images. In Huron County last year, police responded to nearly reports of domestic and sexual violence, a number that has increased slightly in each of the last three years. A key strategy for addressing domestic and sexual assault is trying to prevent it through education, and supporting victims after an assault takes place.
Domestic and sexual assault are often a part of complex cases that can involve other types of criminal allegations. The committee is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and social services, and meets once a month to develop strategies for public education, and to discuss specific assault cases in a confidential setting. Domestic violence is defined as an act likely to result in physical, sexual or psychological harm to an intimate partner. It can involve current and former dating partners, common-law spouses and married couples.
Domestic violence also occurs on a spectrum and may not always involve a physical assault—it also includes belittling or name-calling, slander and slurs. This kind of behaviour is often rationalized or downplayed, but it can do significant harm. It can also escalate to incidents that involve hospitalization and criminal charges. Some victims may have grown up in an environment where abusive relationships were seen as normal or commonplace.
As a result, they may not view the abuse as severe enough, and will dismiss it as someone having a bad day. For more information about Huron DART and to access support related to domestic or sexual assault, visit hurondart.
